Ok, well consider it has a vehicle-to-vehicle distance warning system, a "cornering light system" for a little night time knee-scraping action, and a noise cancelation system which is said to allow for an intercom, voice navigation, hands-free cellphone calls, and music player — damn impressive if it really works! And just for kicks, how about an LCD so you can watch those cagers mouth "what the…" as you roll on by.

The Victory Vision 800 is a true concept bike, designed to show just how radical Victory can think. Victory, a division of Polaris ATV's has no intention of producing the Vision 800, but the design is important nonetheless.

The Vision 800 is powered by an 800 cc flat parallel twin, running through a continuously variable transmission, (CVT) connected to an exposed shaft drive incorporated into the single-sided swing arm.

Victory's traditional cruiser style riding position appears on the Vision 800 with the use of long running boards and the lack of any foot controls. Presumably the lack of a clutch, or gears, allows the rear brake to be relocated to the handlebars.

The extreme, front end bias, bulky nose houses storage for two helmets, or anything else, while providing wind protection for the rider. This is in sharp contrast to the short and stubby tail section.

Suzuki confirmed in August 2007 the Suzuki Stratosphere will enter production, although expected release date, initial model year, initial pricing, and specific list of changes from the original prototype shown in Tokyo were not released, aside from the fact that it would retain the six-cylinder narrow-bore engine (Source: Bike (UK) Magazine (print edition), April 2008, page 17). According to Bike Point Australia, the Stratosphere will enter production as a 2009 model.
Oil-price hikes, the weak dollar driving declining motorcycle sales, and mandatory compliance with Euro-5 pollution control standards in Europe (effective September 2009) may have changed the production date of the actual production model (arriving in 2009 as a 2010 model), or may have eliminated the production potential all together. There are also unsubstantiated rumors that Suzuki is intentionally keeping the Stratosphere in the wings as a way of stealing thunder from a possible Honda introduction of a 1-liter VFR model (expected fall 2009 or spring 2010).

Wandering the 1057 booths at the 2008 INTERMOT Bike Show in Cologne, Germany, one of Motorcycle USA’s favorite exhibits was the Innovation Café. Featuring alternative two-wheeled designs, electric and scooters were prominent. Yet there was one electric design that stood out in our minds, the Honda Oree.

A naked street bike , the diminutive scale model size of the Oree doesn’t diminish its big ideas. The creation of two German design college students, Nike Albertus and Andre Look, the intention of the Oree “was to create a bike for dynamic road riding.”

Creating the model only days before the INTERMOT show, Albertus and Look sourced their interest in and honed their talent at the Academy of Art and Design in Offenbach am Main.

The Renovatio (Latin for "Rebirth") concept motorbike from Confederate Motorcycles based in America is a radical concept bike designed by Confederate's lead designer Ed Jacobs.

The Renovatio is extremely minimalistic with all the mechanical elements of the bike on show. With large attachment points easily accessible on the engine, upgrades and various configurations can easily be exchanged.

The 135 horsepower, 125 ft/lbs of torque V-twin engine of the Confederate Renovatio concept was built by Katech Inc. of Detroit. Katech was hired to design five prototype engines, they chose to base the 1686 cc (103 cu in) V-twin on General Motors LS7 7.0 litre V8. Katech were also responsible for the 16 cylinder engine found in the Cadillac Sixteen concept car of 2003.

Confederate already manufacure two high-end and unique bikes, the Confederate Wraith and the Hellcat F131. The Confederate Renovatio is a concept created inline with Confederates current vision.

The Crocker C4 Concept you admire here was designed by Daryl R. Tearne, for the Crocker Motorcycle Co. The C4 gets its name from being the 4th model in the Crocker lineup, after the “Speedway”, the “Small Tank” and finally the “Big Tank”. In conceiving the C4, the objective was to build a modern Crocker the way Al. Crocker himself would have done it if he was still with us today. Some design elements and even some parts were inspired by the original design and incorporated into the new C4. Things like a chassis design with the same original concept but a much more high tech approach. The Headlight’s styling is very similar in shape, but integrates a very modern 7-lens xenon projector lamp into the body. The single sided front fork was inspired by aircraft landing gear. By using this type of front-end setup, the front end is much more narrow and stiffer under heavy braking. By using Penske suspension, and designing rake angle adjustments in the front end, Crocker will be able to offer a custom fit for all customers.The Single sided rear swing arm has also some very unique design features. Body styling use old Crocker elements and alloy accents taken from the Big and Small Tank original models (like the alloy air intakes on the front of the tank). This concept bike will be built to order by Crocker Motorcycle Company.

I feel confident in saying this because he rides around the countryside on the Greenfly - a heavily modified XT500 Yamaha that runs on Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) - and thus, if he happens to fall off, there’s a pressurised gas tank right there between his legs waiting to blow his bollocks off if it gets punctured.
The benefits of running vehicles on LPG are reasonably cheap running costs due to lower government taxes on LPG than unleaded petrol in most places, it has a high octane rating (108RON) and burns quite cleanly. On the flipside, you tend to get significantly less mileage per litre on a tank full of LPG than you would on petrol - and there’s the whole pressurised bollock-exploding gas cylinder thing to worry about as well.

Now that Tesla Motors has resurrected the electric car in screeching sports car form, it's the turn of the motorbike to get all Lithium Ioned up. While it's not the first electric motorcycle, it is possibly the most rough and ready design: if you can afford the $15,000 odd fee for a custom modification, a team at the Electric Motorsport shop in Oakland will take out the nasty engine in your ride and replace it with an array of Lithium Ion batteries. As a prototype, the company created a fully electric version of the Yamaha R1 which has a top speed of 100MPH, a range of 100 miles, does 0-60 in 3 seconds, and looks pretty damn ugly to tell the truth. Ya' see, the number of brick sized Lithium Ion batteries required to eke out this level of performance is 28, which have to fit all willy nilly underneath the bike. Fortunately, the company hopes to produce a more refined production model, as well as a cheaper design with less advanced performance.

Imagine that you were an up and coming motorcycle manufacturer, Italian of course, wanting to make your mark, differentiate yourself from all the other bike producers. What market to go for? What about all those young guys in the cities, cash rich and time poor, willing and able to pay for something stylish or new? If they wanted speed they'd drive their Porsches; no, what they want is something funky and nippy for whizzing about town on. These guys buy £1000 coffee machines and £5000 sofas from that French designer, Philippe Starck, so who can we get to... Hang on, I've got it!

Philippe Starck is one of the modern world's great jobbing designers. He's designed everything from orange juicers to houses and shot to worldwide fame when he redesigned president Mitterand's apartments in the 80's. Along with Ross Lovegrove (small matter of the Sony Walkman and the Audi TT), maybe, he can lay claim to be the designer of the 20th century. He was tasked by Aprilia in the early nineties to produce a motorcycle to appeal to the new generation of slick city dwellers. Essentially, he was told 'you draw it, starting from a blank sheet of paper and we'll build it' with minimal interference from the factory. The result was the extraordinary Moto 6.5 Starck.

Ariel Leader 1959

What appeared in July 1958 was a combination of several new technologies for Ariel, primarily the use of a 250-cc two-stroke engine, pressed-steel frame, and odd-looking trailing-link front forks. The enclosed styling allowed for a chassis structure that stored fuel beneath the seat, while the "tank" served as a convenient storage area.

Another interesting aspect of the Leader was the long list of options available. As a result, few of the 22,000 produced were exactly the same. Color choices included Oriental Blue or Cherry Red with Admiral Gray accents; the model featured here sports the optional side bags and rear luggage rack.

By 1959, Ariel had put all its cards into the Leader, having dropped the Square Four that year. A cheaper, stripped Arrow model followed, as did a Golden Arrow "sport" version. But the deck was stacked against it by this time as Japanese imports flooded the market, and Ariel folded its hand in 1965

Odd looking as it is if you check out the website (sorry they are very secretive and did a true flash web site and I couldn’t embed the video) you can see the video of these little guys touring around the street. Now I see the ENV was first introduced in 2005, but I had yet to hear anything about it back then. Possibly because it runs on liquid hydrogen and seeing how the gas to liquid hydrogen transition hasn’t occurred yet. But none the less, it is a cool concept. Back in 2005, Yamaha showed the wacky 2005 Gen-Ryu hybrid concept bike at the Tokyo Motor Show amidst a raft of other very non-conventional two wheelers such as the aptly named FC-Me fuel cell bike, the ingenious Deinonychus elec tric reconfigurable motorcycle, the Chivicker, Passol and the Maxam two-wheeled limousine. Now it appears certain the bike will become a showroom model in 2010. A series of patent applications detail the new motorcycle which uses the YZF-R6 600cc engine to turn a generator which in turn powers the rear wheel. History shows that every Yamaha styling patent published over the last 20 years has resulted in a full production machine, so there's little doubt this one is also heading for a showroom near you in the very near future. You can expect to see it in the flesh for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year.

Every night, like clockwork, I hear the absurdly loud engines of the phantom (menace) motorbike riders who travel like packs of wolves up and down the Gulf Road. Well, nothing too odd about people ’night riding’ their bikes, so what’s the problem I hear you ask?

Well their choice of timing is very odd for a start. I usually head to sleep at about 1am, but I often hear these guys driving up and down the road well into the early morning. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up at 4 or 5am and still hear these ‘phantom menaces’ riding their bikes. I am a relatively light/medium sleeper and often get woken up by the sound of my glass shuddering like an earthquake has just hit.

WWII motorcycle tank hybrids. Very odd vehicles and I'm not really sure of the reasoning behind their construction, why the motorcycle front end was necessary isn't clear, the one site says it's for stability at high speeds and you actually could remove it in really rough terrain, but they do look interesting.

Specs say they could get up to 45-50mph with the 4 cylinder, 1478cc gasoline engine sourced from Opel, while the vehicle itself was made by NSU. It was designed to go into mountainous terrain and tow a trailer or small gun.

The web sites say there were about 8400 Kettenkrads produced during the war and over 500 afterwards. Some collectors keep them going and I think they look like a real hoot. I love stuff like this and if you dig around enough, you never know what you might find. Neat.

I think it looked better in black, but apparently the owner has painted the thing purple and yellow with some aluminum corrugated ducting. One can only hope that an errant can of brake fluid lands on it to bring it back towards the original aesthetic conception. Here it is in all ugliness:

The Tomahawk, complete with a 500 hp 8.3 liter V-10 Engine normally found in a Dodge Viper, was actually sold to few lucky folks that could afford the most expensive motorcycle. It does have four tires though, and weighs about 1500 lbs., but when you spend $250,000 US dollars to buy a motorcycle, you should expect to get some extra features, right?
